Giraffes on Wheels

Art

It is now February, so can’t say I am off to a productive start to the year. Lately things are a bit bleh, the winter blues, cabin fever, and loss of Dexter still sits heavy on my pen and heart. Walking through town, passing by other dogs, especially if their demeanor, size, or breed remotely resembles my beloved, causes me to tear up and gulp hard. I am trying lots of different little things to bring art back into my life though. Shake things up a little, reflect on past work (pre Dexter art), refill my Lamy pens, more urban sketching. This brought me to revisit my Giraffes on Wheels series.

There is a possible opportunity to display my work in a very hip and trendy restaurant in central Sweden. Whether this comes to fruition or not, it has given me lots of joy reworking and creating new cyclers. I have a little dream or goal to one day have a 100 Giraffes on Wheels show, and this only brings me closer to that goal.

Anyway, displaying art in a restaurant poses some interesting problems to keep in mind. It occurred to me that my artwork may smell if it hangs in a restaurant for a month or two. And these watercolors are rather large, 50cm x 70cm roughly and there is about 10 or so and that would cost a fortune to frame. I can pass that price on to the customer, but then I don’t have that cash right now. Then I have to think about transport of these large artworks, and storage after if they don’t sell. There is also the fear of theft and fire, and of course we all have insurance, but the value is far more than monetary, it is what makes original art original, and invaluable.

So I have come up with a plan that I think will work out. I will hang prints of my work. I have original watercolors that I have digitized and added backgrounds. I can also print them even larger than the originals, I like the 70cmx100cm size and I think that visually will pack a punch. Searching the internet up and down, I hope I have found some print hangers that are affordable and won’t distract from the art. Using QR codes next to each work which will allow a guest to look up my work while they are nibbling on hors d’eurves and sipping sour local brews. I can travel by train to this venue and keep the originals safe for now. What do you think?
